Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction 2008 shortlist announced

London, 9.30am, 15 April 2008: The Orange Broadband Prize for Fiction today announces the 2008 shortlist. Now in its thirteenth year, the Prize celebrates excellence, originality and accessibility in international women’s writing.

'We spent a great deal of time in the judging meeting asking the question, "Is this a book you feel passionately about? Is it a book that you might pass onto a friend and urge them to read?"' commented Kirsty Lang, Chair of judges. 'We all felt these six books passed that test.'

She continued, “''m extremely pleased we have three first novels as well as some very established authors on a list that reflects the scope, variety and international breadth of the Orange Prize.'

This year’s shortlist honours both new and well-established writers. Only one author, Rose Tremain, has previously been shortlisted (2004).

Orange Broadband Award for New Writers Shortlist announced

London, 08 April 2008: The Orange Broadband Award for New Writers, launched in 2005 in partnership with Arts Council England, announces this year’s shortlist.

'This was a very strong year for first fiction,' said Shami Chakrabarti, Director of Liberty and Chair of judges. 'There were so many worthy contenders for our shortlist that it was a huge challenge to settle on a final three. If there are any preconceptions that women’s fiction dwells only on domestic themes, this shortlist will blow them away. These three books are truly ambitious in scope and reflect the international nature of this prize.'

I am Writer in Residence at HMP Low Newton, a women's prison, and intend to run a series of reading workshops based on the Orange Short List, as well as awarding our own 'Orange Prize' for our own winning book. Is there any possibility of obtaining complementary copies of the shortlisted books for this project???

As a retired lecturer in Drama and Dramaturgy, I can now indulge my passion for reading novels. Rose Tremain's achievement is, in my opinion, unsurpassed. It is a magnificent work of art. I love Thackeray, and among contemporary novelists, Maggie O'Farrell, but Rose Tremain, as winner of the Orange Prize 2008, has written one of the greatest novels it has ever been my joy to read.

The road home is a great book, I took it on a scuba diving holiday and could not put it down, as a result, unfortunately I did not do as much diving as I had planned!

Yes I loved the road home, its a great book, I spd a lot of time re-reading this book and agree with the other commentor's reference to Orwell, a worthy book indeed!

Rose Tremain is a great author for sure, I am not sure that I would agree with the reference to Orwell though. Whats great about Rose is her ability to create such variance between her different works. I also think the topic of The Road Home is quite poignent at the moment. Are ghd going to sponsor literary prizes too then? I think it is great to see private industry taking such an interest in literature and the arts, the more the merrier!

There are some great titles in for this award. It seems lately you cannot mention books without the subject turning to harry potter or some other "fad book" its good to see companies promoting more serious work.

omg, I absolutely love The Road Home - it is probably my favourite book in years. Echos of Orwell. Orange are one of the few companies with the right image to sponsor this sort of prize, ghd might be another.
